Nigeria's
Sonny Okusuns paved the way for an explosion of African
Reggae, with his best selling records of the late
1970s that blended the Jamaican form with West African
highlife and Juju music. It was the next decade however
that African Reggae took off with Lucky Dube and Alpha
Blondy emerging with their own brand of African Reggae.
While not in the same league as far as record sales other
performers made an impact with their own brand of African
Reggae. Including Nigeria's Mandators, Ras Kimono, Evi
Edna Ogholi-Ogosi, Zimbabwe's John Chibadura , Senegal's
Adioa, Askia Modibo from Mali a former associate
of Alpha Blondy. The Reggae influences have echoes of
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff,
Third World and Steel Pulse. Alpha Blondy and Lucky Dube
both have huge following in Africa and around the world.
They are only the tip of the African Reggae music scene. |
